Mario Arvelo (Santo Domingo, 1970) is a lawyer, political scientist and career diplomat of the Dominican Republic. He has a background in the private sector and civil society before entering public service, having served in Washington, Tokyo and Santiago de Chile; he is currently an ambassador to the United Nations agencies specializing in food, agriculture and rural development: FAO, IFAD and WFP. He has chaired the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), the FAO Committee on Agriculture and the Global Soil Partnership, among other multilateral governance responsibilities. Since 2023, he chairs the International Steering Committee of the UN Decade of Action for Family Farming, and is a member of the governing councils of IFAD and WFP, and the board of directors of the CFS. His numerous publications include "Food and nutritional security in the Dominican Republic and in the Caribbean and Central American environment" (Social Studies, XLIV-163, 2021).
